a visual orgy :: night at the movies

This was one of the few times I actually laughed. *sigh*

Funny People. "Funny" People. FUNNY... People. I surely hope I'm not the only person out there with the assumption that when a film is listed as a comedy and has the bloody word "Funny" in its title that laughs should ensue while watching said film. Alas, this was not the case.

Sure, I chuckled here and there. But that's my problem with this movie: those moments were rare. You should know that this movie first and foremost should not be approached as a comedy. Regardless of Judd Apatow's history of amusing films, this is a movie apart. This idea can be fairly confusing being that a majority of the supporting cast are in fact comedians. Interesting how that works, eh? This movie, very much, is a drama. The story supposedly revolves around the egotistical yet wholly self-loathing George Simmons [Adam Sandler] as he works through the ups-and-downs surrounding his near-death ailment. And I say supposedly because I honestly felt more involved with the development of Ira Wright [Seth Rogan]. That and Simmons becomes an outright douche at the end.

Throughout the film, Wright goes about trying to write material and generally be there for Simmons who takes him under his wing as some sort of attempt at finding meaning in his life before he dies. Then he doesn't. So what does he do in celebration? Tries to break up a family and destroys what could have been a friendship with Wright. Sma-art...

Overall, it wasn't that bad of a movie. The story unfolded well, and the supporting cast wasn't overlooked that much, and I never got lost. It was frustrating at times, but in a "I hate this character's actions" way instead of a "I want to stab myself for watching this" way which is a good thing. If you're thinking about watching this for laughs, pick up one of Apatow's older movies. Want to see a more dramatic and sad movie with a let down of an ending, pick this one up as a Rental.

Hehehehe... "Went to Hell"...
