Ironic symbolism? Perhaps...
In yet another example of hype vs quality, Fanboys sadly does not live up to what many people were hoping for. That is not saying it is at all a horrid flick, mind you; it just could have been without the aforementioned hype.
Fanboys was swimming in a seemingly perpetual limbo, teasing Star Wars fans with release dates and trailers here and there. Originally slated for release in mid 2008, this flick was pushed back repeatedly until it was finally released in early 2009... in only a few theaters across the country for a very limited time. Hmmm... I guess people stopped giving a shit?
Under the assumption that you, my faithful and nonexistent readers, have no doubt figured out that what I have said is quite contradictory, please allow me to explain: around the time it was originally made known, there was quite a lot of buzz going on about this movie. Then it was delayed. Again and again. Over time, folks stopped caring and buzz died, but, where there was buzz, Fanboys was hyped astronomically. There was no doubt that something held back this long would be nothing but astronomical! Right? Is everyone still following me? Good.
Off to the movie! We follow the protagonist Eric [Sam Huntington] and his interactions with his old fanboy friends Linus, Hutch, and Windows. Of course, in usual teen comedy fashion, a drop dead gorgeous tag along lass joins this group of misfits on their adventure, and who's hotness is predictably unbeknown to the boys. Oh, the naughty things I would do Zoe... Naughty things... Bent over a chair... 69... In a bathroom... In a kitchen... In a church...
*ahem* Moving along...
Here you can basically add every single teen movie plot skeleton made in the past 20 years and throw on a Star Wars skin: boy tries to 'grow up', huge event causes adventure to occur, insert random mishaps and zaniness, internal struggle within main character, overcoming conflict and returning to roots, success, happy ending. Same old shit we've all seen, but what was supposed to be the kicker [the Star Wars references, damn it!] ended up being watered down meh. Sure, some of the factoid drops put a smirk on my face, but this movie was just 'on par' with every other film that's come out in this genre; nothing special about it at all.
Perhaps if this flick was released during the Star Wars craze, it would have had more merit. Even if it wasn't pushed back for bullshit reasons and was actually released when it was supposed to be, it could have done better. But, as it stands, Fanboys is the epitome of 'too little, too late'. This is, sadly, only worth a DVD rental. Wait for it to hit your local Blockbuster equivalent. Why not Blockbuster itself? That's another conversation entirely...
